Utah man pleads guilty to backing over, killing woman

A 60-year-old man who ran over a Cottonwood Heights woman as he backed out of a steep driveway last year was ordered last week to pay a fine and serve 200 hours of community service.

Dan L. Eining, who was charged with criminal negligent homicide after the 2013 crash, entered a guilty plea in abeyance on Feb. 27, which means Eining's record will be wiped of the offense if he stays out of trouble and does as the court tells him for the next year and a half.

The charge, a class A misdemeanor, carries a maximum sentence of up to a year in jail.

Third District Judge Elizabeth Hruby-Mills instead ordered Eining to pay an $800 fine and serve 200 hours of community service — at a rate of 25 hours per month, according to court documents.

He will appear in court in August 2015 to see if he's held up his side of the deal. If he has, his criminal record will be wiped clean.

Eining was charged in the April death of Sheralyn Quinney.

Three witnesses testified in September that Quinney was hit by Eining's car as she was walking with her husband near 3600 East and 8200 South.

Quinney, 75, was knocked over and hit her head on the concrete. She was rushed to Intermountain Medical Center, where she underwent surgery and later died.

Eining told police he did not see the couple walking behind his car until it was too late, officials said.

The victim's husband, Gary Quinney, was unharmed.
