YouTube video lands Utah teen on 'The Voice'

Madilyn Paige put a video on YouTube, and now she's in the top 48 on NBC's "The Voice."

And, yes, it was pretty much that easy for the 16-year-old from Provo, who said she's "mostly performed in local competitions."

"I was in a competition called Vocal Sport, and I posted my video on YouTube," she said. "I guess 'The Voice' just got ahold of it."

The show's talent scouts contacted her through Vocal Sport.

"I went and had a private audition," Paige said. "It was really surprising. I have a smaller channel. It was just really sudden. I didn't think that doing one performance could lead to such a huge opportunity.

"It was really amazing. And the fact that they saw my video when there are millions of videos on YouTube."

Of course, Paige still had to impress the judges on "The Voice." Which she did. Just not the judge she wanted to impress.

"Originally, actually, I wanted Adam [Levine]," she said. "But, obviously, that wasn't an option." Because Levine didn't pick her.

On "The Voice," the first round of the competition is the blind auditions. The hopefuls perform while the four judges face away from them; if a judge is interested in selecting the hopeful to join his/her team, he/she hits a button and turns the chair around to face the singer. If more than one judge hits that button, the singer chooses among them.

"Honestly, once I was actually on the spot," Paige said, "I really didn't care who it was as long as I got someone to turn."

As she performed "Titanium" on the show that aired on Tuesday, Usher turned his chair around first, and Shakira followed.

"I think what really swayed me between Usher and Shakira was when Usher said he was going to stick with me and he was going to be there by my side and help me in my career. And that really stuck out to me.

"And he also talked about helping me improve with my performance, and that's something I've really been wanting to improve on."

"The Voice" airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 7 p.m. on NBC/Ch. 5. Utahn Madilyn Paige's next appearance has not yet been scheduled.
