Senate panel votes to beef up U. Reading Clinic

The Senate Education Committee gave the nod Thursday to an expansion of the University of Utah Reading Clinic, which has helped 11,000 students learn to read since 1999.
The committee earlier had rejected a more costly expansion, which would have put satellite clinics in Weber and Iron counties.
The amended SB104, sponsored by Sen. Aaron Osmond, R-South Jordan, would give the clinic $475,000 to expand in Salt Lake City.
Besides tutoring children, the clinic offers professional training for teachers via matching funds from schools, and it trains U. elementary education majors. There's a waiting list to get into the clinic, which has trained some 5,500 teachers in the past 14 years.
