An 18-year-old woman was in critical but improved condition Friday, two days after she rode her long board into the path of a car near the Brigham Young University campus in Provo.

Provo police Lt. Mathew Siufanua said that Lexi Mae Hansen, a BYU student, still faced a long recovery, however, and was expected to remain in Utah Valley Regional Medical Center's Intensive Care Unit for several more weeks.

Hansen was riding southbound along a sidewalk on University Avenue about 6:20 p.m. Wednesday night when, according to a witness, she tried to ride across the crosswalk at Canyon Road.

The witness said it appeared that Hansen, who was wearing earphones but not a helmet, was trying to race a northbound car that had the right-of-way and was making a turn onto Canyon Road.

She was struck by the car, which immediately stopped. Siufanua said no citations were issued to the driver in what appeared to be an unfortunate accident.
