The lonely stretch of highway where Utah County Sheriff Sgt. Cory Wride was ambushed and murdered on Jan. 30 could soon be named in his honor.

The Senate Transportation Committee voted 3-0 Friday to endorse SB234 to name SR-73 — through Saratoga Springs, Eagle Mountain and Cedar Valley — as the "Cory B. Wride Memorial Highway." It now goes to the full Senate.

Sen. Mark Madsen, R-Saratoga Springs, sponsor of the bill, said Wride served his community for years, and was well liked. "It's appropriate," he said.

"It's very appropriate, and I wish there were no need for this bill," said Sen. Margaret Dayton, R-Orem.

Committee Chairman Kevin Van Tassell, R-Vernal, who has relatives in Eagle Mountain, said, "I am surprised by the amount of interaction [Wride] had in that community…. He's been to many of the school activities. Even though he didn't live in the area he was there, and was part of it."
