4A boys' basketball: Mountain View slays Logan on 3 in OT

Mountain View's Hayden Young found himself with the ball in his hands. He stood two feet behind the arc, and the play had not been drawn up for him, but the clock was running thin. So he lifted and fired Monday night at the Huntsman Center.

The ball went through the hoop. The Bruins' bench erupted, swarming Young near the top of the key. Logan players sauntered to their bench, stunned, and protested that there still was time on the clock.

But after the referees convened and made their ruling, it became official. Young's 3 had given Mountain View a 56-53 overtime win over Logan in the first round of the Class 4A state tournament.

"We were just running our play, and I was probably in the wrong spot," Young said. "But I was going to hand it off to Wyatt Allred, and he went the other way, so I was like, 'Crap.' Then I was open so I shot it."

After the pandemonium died down, Young revealed what goes through the mind of a player after he takes a final shot he's not supposed to take.

"I thought it was a little short," he said.

The heroics capped one of the most evenly matched games of the first round of the tournament. Each team made runs throughout the game, but the other team always countered.

"I knew it'd be a tremendous game," Bruins coach Nate Carling said. "We both had 18 wins on the year. The more I watched them, we were just like mirror images of each other."

The story was the same in overtime, as neither team gained an edge that wasn't quickly erased on the other side of the court. That is until Young's 3 gave the Bruins a lead the Grizzlies never got the opportunity to match.

"I think we were all ready for it to be over when we won," Young said. "We didn't want to go out there again. But we didn't have to so that was good."
