2 teens who escaped juvenile work camp in custody; 2 missing

Two of four males who escaped from a juvenile work camp in Draper were in custody Wednesday night.

Eighteen-year-old Jesse Hopkins and a 17-year-old were found at a Maverik gas station in Orem on Wednesday, less than a day after they escaped the court-ordered work camp. Two other boys, 15 and 16, were still missing Wednesday; they were believed to be in or near Salt Lake City, said Orem police Lt. Craig Martinez.

The four teens may have been picked up by someone driving a stolen vehicle, authorities have said. A 2004 Isuzu Ascender was reportedly stolen by another juvenile about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday from the parking lot of Burger Boys Restaurant in Lehi.

However the car was not with the two teens police found at the Maverik station at 85 W. 800 North, Martinez said. Officers went to the station after receiving a tip they may be at one of Orem's several Maverik stations, Martinez said.

Department of Human Services spokeswoman Elizabeth Sollis said arrest warrants were issued for all four teens, who ran from the camp about 7 p.m. Tuesday. They all wore dark green sweatshirts and basketball shoes.

The stolen Ascender had a license plate A207JV.

Anyone with information is asked to call police. The boys are believed to have friends and family in Sandy, Draper, Lehi and Vernal.
