Utah forecast: Like that springy day? Treasure the memory

Enjoy that balmy, spring-like midweek weather? Good, because rain and snow are back for northern Utah as the week winds up.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the northern Wasatch and Unitas. For an area stretching from Logan south through Ogden, Salt Lake City and Provo to Nephi, and into northeastern Utah to Vernal, forecasters predicted up to 10 inches of new mountain snow and periodic valley rain showers.

The advisory was effective 3 p.m. Thursday through 5 p.m. Friday. Forecasters warned that snowfall would be especially heavy at 6,000 feet elevation and above, making travel through the region's passes and at summits treacherous.

The Salt Lake and Tooele valleys looked for rain and gusty afternoon thunderstorms through Friday. High temperatures were to reach the low-50s Friday, down a few degrees from Thursday's forecast.

Southern Utahns were in for windy weather, with gusts around 25 mph expected late Thursday into early Friday. Highs were to reach the upper-60s to low-70s.

The Utah Division of Air Quality graded breathability statewide as "green," or healthy.

The Utah Avalanche Center rated the mountains above Ogden and in the Uintas at "considerable" risk for potentially dangerous snowslides, while Logan, Salt Lake City, Provo and Moab earned "moderate" avalanche risk grades.
