Phoenix • Federal investigators say an Oklahoma man mailed a package of explosives to Sheriff Joe Arpaio in Arizona last year.

U.S. Postal Service officials said Tuesday that Gregory Lynn Shrader, 55, is accused of sending the package addressed to the Maricopa County sheriff. Investigators say the package was discovered April 11 in a Postal Service collection box in northern Arizona. Authorities originally said the package appeared to contain an improvised explosive device, which could have led to serious injuries or death if opened. But investigators later determined the device was inoperable. It wasn't clear Tuesday if Shrader was in custody.
