Letter: Read up on city ordinances before parking in SLC

To those who park in Salt Lake City, beware: You'll be ticketed if you park a few extra inches from the curb.

When my wife returned to her car on 500 West, she found a $25 ticket for parking beyond 12 inches from the curb

She had a tape measure in the car; she measured her front tire. It was a few inches over the 12. When she explained to the parking enforcement person at the City County Building that the regulation was not posted anywhere, she was told the law is published in the city ordinances and in the DMV instruction book.

Costs to contest the citation could total $165 plus the $25 fine.

So if you plan to park: (1) Be familiar with all the city ordinances or carry a copy. (2) Refresh yourself on the rules in the DMV booket. (3) Carry a tape measure to check your position before leaving your car. (4) Always have the mayor's home phone number in case you need Becker the Biker to explain.

Plus, always carry a flashlight so you can read instructions on the sometimes-working parking permit towers after dark.
