American Fork police and paramedics rushed to the scene of reported gunfire in the Cedar Hills neighborhood early Friday morning, only to find no gunshots had been fired.
What they did find was an elderly man, apparently suffering a psychotic reaction to post-operative medications, who had allegedly told a neighbor he was being shot at. Police believe the man then began either throwing rocks, or used a slingshot, to put several indentations into the walls of the neighbor's home.
"There was a reported shooting. However, that was incorrect. No guns, no shots fired," Cedar Hills Mayor Gary Gygi said, adding that the suspect was taken into custody and admitted to the American Fork Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.
Gygi said he understood the man, who lives in the house with his mother, was a military veteran who had recently undergone knee or hip surgery and may have had a reaction to his medications.
Public safety dispatchers confirm a 911 call of shots being fired came in at 6:38 a.m.
