BYU golfers place 2nd in Arizona

Justin Keiley and Jordan Hammer led the BYU men's golf team to a second-place finish at the Desert Shootout on Saturday in Goodyear, Ariz.

BYU lost a one-hole playoff to UMKC for the team title after both teams finished the third round with a score of 833.

Keiley (206) tied for sixth place with a 67 in the final round, while Hammer trailed by one stroke to tie in eighth place.

Southern Utah's Jake Holt (205) placed fifth, helping the Thunderbirds finish eighth.

Baseball

Oregon 4, Utah 1 • In Eugene, Ore., the Utes had just five hits in their Pac-12 loss to the 12th-ranked Ducks. Utah starter Zach Adams took the loss despite holding Oregon to two runs on five hits over six innings. Utah fell to 9-12 overall and 0-5 in the conference.

San Francisco 5, BYU 2 • About 200 spectators watched as the Dons beat the Cougars in a West Coast Conference game at spacious AT&T Park. Brock Whitney hit an RBI single as BYU (8-17, 1-5) took a two-run lead in the first innings.

BYU's Kolton Mahoney (2-4) took the loss, giving up four runs on five hits over six innings.

SLCC 3-7, College of Southern Idaho 6-1 • In Twin Falls, Idaho, Salt Lake Community College starter Chris Bradford struck out eight batters in 41/3 innings while picking up the win in the nightcap. He allowed six hits and one run.

Garrett Bushman hit a single, a double and a home run for the Bruins in the win.

Softball

Oregon 8, Utah 7 • The Utes scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh, but their rally came up short in their Pac-12 home opener. Hannah Flippen was 3-for-4 with two RBIs for the Utes (11-10, 1-2), and Bridget Castro also was 3-for-4.

Women's track

In Los Angeles, Utah's Ali Eisenbeiss recorded a personal best and finished second in the 800 meters at the Trojan Invitational in 2 minutes, 8.19 seconds. Purdue's Kari Shoolbraid won in 2:06.90.

Men's volleyball

BYU 3, Cal Baptist 0 • In Provo, Taylor Sander had 13 kills, becoming the Cougars' career leader in the rally-scoring era with 1,563, and the Cougars won 25-20, 26-24, 25-22.
