West Valley City man shot by would-be robber remains critical

A 20-year-old West Valley City man remained in critical condition Monday, a day after he was shot during an alleged drug-related robbery attempt at an apartment complex.

West Valley City police Sgt. Blair Barfuss said the shooting took place about 6 a.m. Sunday inside a unit at Overlook Point Apartments, 4640 S. 2970 West.

Officers responding to a 911 call found the victim with a gunshot wound in the head. The man, whose name was withheld by police, was rushed to the hospital.

Witnesses told police the shooter had come to the apartment and went into a bathroom with the victim. Witnesses heard arguing and then a gunshot. People confronted the shooter and managed to take the firearm after a struggle in which several more shots were fired without anyone being hit.

The shooter then fled the complex. An 18-year-old was tracked down and arrested Sunday afternoon. Police said that during questioning, the man admitted to taking the gun with him to the apartment with the intention of robbing the victim.

He was booked into the Salt Lake County jail on suspicion of first-degree felony counts of attempted homicide and aggravated robbery; second-degree felony counts of aggravated assault and obstruction of justice; third-degree felony discharge of a firearm; and class B misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.
