Washington • A sailor was killed late Monday in a shooting aboard a Navy destroyer docked in Norfolk, Va., the Navy said Tuesday in a statement, before security forces killed a civilian believed to be the gunman.
The shooting occurred about 11:20 p.m. at Naval Station Norfolk, the world's largest naval base.
The Navy said the suspected gunman, a civilian, killed a sailor aboard the Mahan, a guided-missile destroyer, before naval security killed him. A spokeswoman in Norfolk, Petty Officer 2nd Class Molly Greendeer, said the suspect was a civilian contractor. There were no other injuries.
The names of the sailor and the civilian have not been released.
Monday's shooting comes after a deadly episode in September at the Washington Navy Yard, in which a gunman, a contractor who used to be a Navy reservist, killed 12 people before being fatally shot at the yard, prompting investigations into the security at military installations.
