Letter: We're running out of time on climate change

Representatives from 100 countries and the top climate scientists in the world were in Japan this week to discuss a massive and authoritative report on the impacts of global warming.

The report echos what nearly every major scientific organization has said: "The burning of coal, oil and gas is producing an increasing amount of heat-trapping greenhouse gases such as CO2. Those gases change Earth's climate, bringing warmer temperatures and more extreme weather, and the problem is worsening."

The human problems of hunger, disease, drought, flooding, refugees and war are multiplying by the day. Isn't it about time we stop kidding ourselves?

For the news organizations and media meteorologists to pretend that this problem does not exist or is a problem for future generations is a dereliction of duty, a disservice to their audience and allows big money instead of facts, dire facts, to shape the argument and the opinion of politicians, business and the citizens.

Our children's and grandchildren's future and maybe even their survival, are at stake. We are running out of time.

Climate change is going to affect — make that is already affecting — nearly every aspect of human life.
