Crews rush to 2-alarm blaze in Salt Lake City apartment complex

Firefighters rushed to the scene of a two-alarm blaze that was burning inside the walls of a downtown Salt Lake City apartment complex Thursday morning.

Salt Lake City Fire Department spokesman Jasen Asay said the first 911 call on the fire, at 53 S. 300 East, came in at 6:30 a.m.

No injuries were reported, and firefighters were able to quickly evacuate an unspecified number of residents of the City Line Apartments' four-story, older brick building. By 7 a.m., crews had controlled the fire, limiting it to two units — one seriously damaged, the other less so — and a portion of wall and ceiling between the third and fourth floors.

As of 7:45 a.m., all residents, except for the two renting the burned units, had been allowed back into their homes. Alternative accommodations were being sought for the two displaced residents.

Asay said a damage estimate was still being assessed. The cause of the fire was determined to have been electrical, having started in the ceiling of a corner third-floor unit, near a lighting fixture.
