A homeowner in northwest Salt Lake City thought it would be a fine idea to dig a pond as part of his landscaping project — then he unearthed the bones.

Salt Lake City police Detective Veronica Montoya said officers and state Medical Examiner's Office staff responded when the homeowner reported his discovery at 500 N. 200 West about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

While the bones appear to be human and not recently buried, authorities did not know how old they may be.

The western and northwestern areas of the city have occasionally yielded previously forgotten pioneer or even pre-Mormon settlement era Native American graves.

Whether the bones belong is such a historical setting will be mystery up to the Medical Examiner's forensic personnel to unravel.
