An aging water main broke Friday afternoon in Salt Lake City, forcing road closures and a lengthy cleanup.

The main broke on Foothill Boulevard near 1180 South, according to Salt Lake City spokesman Art Raymond. The break closed three southbound lanes on the road, two of which were expected to remain blocked through the night. The southbound third lane reopened Friday afternoon.

Raymond said repairs should be completed by Saturday afternoon.

The water main was installed in the 1940s, Raymond explained, and was part of a stretch of pipe officials had already scheduled for an upgrade. The city also had set aside money for the upgrade.

The break did not disrupt water service.
