Former Weber State basketball coach charged with assault

Former Weber State and University of Utah basketball coach Joe Cravens is facing charges after allegedly hitting a man with a baseball bat.

Cravens, 60, who is a basketball broadcaster and the St. Joseph Catholic High girls' basketball coach, was charged March 18 with a third-degree felony count of aggravated assault in 3rd District Court in Salt Lake County.

According to a probable cause statement, Cravens met with a man on Jan. 13 at a Sandy diner to discuss a car accident the man had been in with Cravens' daughter. An argument ensued, leading Cravens to allegedly hit the man in the leg with a bat, leaving a large red mark and swelling.

Cravens, South Ogden, was arrested and released Wednesday on $5,000 bond. A hearing has been set for April 15.

A call to Cravens on Saturday requesting comment was not immediately returned.

He briefly served as interim head coach for Utah under Rick Majerus, coached Weber State from 1999-2006. He led St. Joseph to the 2012 and 2013 Class 1A state titles and was named the Utah High School Activities Association 2013 girls' basketball coach of the year.
