Woman cleared of involvement in Salt Lake City police shooting

Investigators in Salt Lake City have found a woman they were seeking in connection with a Friday police shooting and cleared her of any involvement.

Police announced on Tuesday that they had interviewed Melissa Medina, 36, who was thought to be acquainted with Christopher Leo Knight, a California fugitive who wounded two SLCPD officers Friday before being killed by return fire.

Investigators had said Medina may have been with Knight when he traveled to Utah last week, but Tuesday said she was not connected to the case.

Knight, 34, of Lakeport, Calif., was wanted by California authorities on suspicion of drug possession. Two Salt Lake City patrol officers stopped a Jeep carrying Knight about 2:15 a.m. Friday near 300 South and West Temple. Knight, who was the passenger, was evasive when questioned, so the officers ordered him out of the vehicle. A Knight got out, he fired on the officers, striking one in the arm and one in the thigh. Officers shot Knight, who died at the scene.

The driver of the Jeep was not injured; he was interviewed and released.
