North Ogden police: Man kills himself after assaulting woman

For North Ogden police, it was the domestic disturbance call of nightmares.

North Ogden police Detective Paul Rhoades said officers were called to an apartment in the 400 East block of 2650 North at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday following a 911 call from a man who said he had just attacked his neighbor. The caller then hung up.

When officers arrived they saw blood on the outside of a unit's closed door. They knocked on the door and a male voice inside asked who they were. When the officers identified themselves as police, they immediately heard a gunshot from inside.

A dazed and bloody female then opened the door and told the officers that her male neighbor had just shot himself inside her apartment. Police entered the unit and found the man, dead from a gunshot wound to the head.

The 31-year-old woman told police that she had awakened at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday to find the man standing over her bed, a gun in his hand. He then attacked the woman, at one point firing two rounds into the floor as he beat her.

A 6-year-old boy, the woman's son, was unharmed, but she was taken to McKay-Dee Hospital for treatment and later released.

Police on Wednesday identified the woman's deceased attacker at 54-year-old Todd Alan Barber.

Rhoades said that while the case was still under investigation, it appeared Barber had become enraged after the woman attempted to end their friendship.
