Logan cops look for hit-and-run shoplifter

Logan police are on the lookout for a suspected shoplifter who eluded capture only to abandon his car after being involved in a hit-and-run crash.

The incident began about 9 p.m. Tuesday when an off-duty Cache County sheriff's deputy saw a man stealing items from a Walmart store at 1150 S. 100 West. He confronted the suspect as he left the store, and the man dropped the stolen items and fled on foot.

The suspect then got into a white Chevrolet Monte Carlo, which the deputy described when he reported the incident to Logan police.

Assistant Police Chief Jeff Curtis said officers spotted the car about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday near 400 West and 200 North and attempted to pull the vehicle over. The suspect refused to stop, initially obeying speed limits but then accelerating away from officers at 1400 North and 400 West.

Curtis said officers terminated their pursuit for public safety reasons, but the suspect sped on, crashing into another vehicle near 1400 North and 400 East. The suspect then bailed out and ran from the scene.

No injuries were reported.

The search for the suspect, described as a 6-foot Latino wearing a white hat, khaki shirt and Levis, continued on Wednesday.
