RED SOX 6, ORIOLES 2

BALTIMORE • Mike Napoli homered and drove in four runs, John Lackey allowed three hits in six innings and the Boston Red Sox spoiled the Baltimore debut of Ubaldo Jimenez by beating the Orioles 6-2 Wednesday night.

David Ortiz hit a two-run homer off Jimenez (0-1) and Dustin Pedroia had four hits for the defending World Series champion Red Sox, now 1-1 after losing to Baltimore on opening day.

Nelson Cruz homered for the second time in two games for the Orioles, who mustered only six hits off Lackey and three relievers.

Jimenez allowed four runs, five hits and three walks in six innings. He struck out six.

Lackey (1-0) gave up two runs, walked one and struck out six. The right-hander is 14-5 with a 3.34 ERA in 24 career starts against Baltimore.

MARINERS 8, ANGELS 2

ANAHEIM, Calif. • James Paxton pitched seven scoreless innings of two-hit ball, Robinson Cano drove in his first run for Seattle, which completed a three-game sweep in the team's first series under new manager Lloyd McClendon.

Mike Zunino, Justin Smoak and Corey Hart all homered for Seattle.

Paxton (1-0) threw 99 pitches in his fifth big league start and struck out nine, including Josh Hamilton all three times he faced him.

Hector Santiago (0-1) was charged with four runs, four hits and three walks in five-plus innings.

BLUE JAYS 3, RAYS 0

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. • Mark Buehrle allowed four hits over 8 2-3 innings, Jose Bautista homered twice and Toronto beat Tampa Bay.

Buehrle (1-0) struck out 11 and walked one.

Sergio Santos entered after Ben Zobrist had a two-out single off Buehrle in the ninth and walked Evan Longoria. Brett Cecil then struck out pinch-hitter Matt Joyce for his first save.

Bautista put the Blue Jays ahead 1-0 on his first homer of the season, a solo shot off Matt Moore (0-1) in the fourth. He also connected against Josh Lueke during the seventh.

ATHLETICS 6, INDIANS 1, 1ST GAME; INDIANS 6, ATHLETICS 4, 2nd GAME

OAKLAND, Calif. • Scott Kazmir shut out his former team into the eighth inning in his Oakland debut, and the Athletics beat the Indians in the first game of a day-night doubleheader.

Alberto Callaspo hit a two-run homer and Yoenis Cespedes, Jed Lowrie and Brandon Moss added RBI hits for the Athletics, who broke out offensively after being shut out Monday in their big league record 10th straight opening loss.

Kazmir (1-0) allowed just three hits and no walks in 7 1-3 scoreless innings, striking out five.

Corey Kluber (0-1) failed to make it out of the fourth inning and lost for the first time in 13 starts since June 27. He gave up five runs and eight hits in 3 1-3 innings.

In Game 2, Michael Brantley atoned for a rare error by hitting a two-run single in the ninth inning off new Oakland closer Jim Johnson that helped Cleveland salvage a split.

Cody Allen (2-0) pitched a scoreless eighth for the win and John Axford got three outs for his second save.

TIGERS 2, ROYALS 1, 10 INNINGS

DETROIT • Ian Kinsler homered and drove in the winning run with a single in the 10th inning to lift the Tigers over the Royals.

Max Scherzer pitched eight scoreless innings for the Tigers, but Joe Nathan blew his first save chance since signing with Detroit in the offseason.

Acquired from Texas for Prince Fielder in a November blockbuster trade, Kinsler homered in the fourth and won the game with a line drive to left-center field off Tim Collins (0-1).

Al Alburquerque (1-0) earned the win.

Scherzer allowed four hits and a walk with seven strikeouts.

WHITE SOX 7, TWINS 6, 11 INNINGS

CHICAGO • Leury Garcia reached on a bunt single in the 11th inning and came home on a balk and a pair of wild pitches by Samuel Deduno, giving the White Sox a win over the Twins.

Before a crowd of just 10,625, Chicago came back from a 6-4 deficit in the ninth on Garcia's run-scoring single off Glen Perkins and Adam Eaton's RBI grounder

Ronald Belisario (1-0) pitched 1 1-3 hitless innings for the win.

The game was delayed 4 minutes, 40 seconds during the top of the seventh after Eaton appeared to catch Oswaldo Arcia's flyball to center and then dropped it when he went to grab the ball from his glove. The play was ruled a catch, but the Twins challenged the call and it was overturned by a replay umpire in New York.

ASTROS 3, YANKEES 1

HOUSTON • Dexter Fowler homered and tripled and Matt Dominguez added a home run late to help the Astros take the opening series from the Yankees with a second straight win.

Houston won the opener 6-2 and put a damper on the first series of Derek Jeter's final season. Jeter was 0 for 3 with a walk and a strikeout.

Fowler's leadoff homer put Houston up and he scored the second run after his triple in the third.

The Yankees scored in the seventh before the Astros added an insurance run with Dominguez's homer in the bottom half.

Jarred Cosart (1-0) allowed four hits in five scoreless innings and Josh Fields pitched a perfect ninth for the save.

Hiroki Kuroda (0-1) yielded three hits and two runs with five strikeouts in six innings.

INTERLEAGUE

RANGERS 4, PHILLIES 3

ARLINGTON, Texas • Shin-Soo Choo drew a bases-loaded, game-ending walk against Jonathan Papelbon as the Rangers rallied in the ninth inning for the second night in a row, beating the Phillies.

The Rangers scored three times in the ninth off Papelbon (0-1), who gave up four hits while retiring only one batter.

Adrian Beltre, whose ninth-inning single Tuesday night drove home Choo with the winning run, started this rally with a leadoff single. After Mitch Moreland's double, pinch-hitter Jim Adduci had an RBI infield single and Leonys Martin singled through a drawn-in infield to drive in the tying run. Donnie Murphy walked on four pitches before Choo got to full-count pitch before walking.

Seth Rosin (1-0) worked two scoreless innings for his first major league victory
