College basketball • Kansas freshman 7-footer Joel Embiid will enter the NBA draft after a breakthrough season that ended with a stress fracture in his back that kept him out of the NCAA tourney. Embiid, who had been mulling whether to return for weeks, said during a news conference Wednesday in Lawrence, Kan., that he decided Sunday. The Cameroon native is raw, having picked up the game just a few years ago. But his athleticism made a believer out of NBA scouts, and many think Embiid will join teammate Andrew Wiggins among the first few picks in June's draft. Wiggins has already said he is leaving Kansas after his freshman season.
Northwestern QB opposes union push
College football • Northwestern's Trevor Siemian says it was wrong for former quarterback Kain Colter and other players to explore unionization without first taking concerns to their coach and administrators. A regional director for the National Labor Relations Board has cleared the way for Northwestern's scholarship football players to vote April 25 on whether to form what would be the nation's first union for college athletes. Coach Pat Fitzgerald has told his players to vote against the union. Siemian is Colter's replacement at quarterback. Former NFL MVP Adrian Peterson said Wednesday that college athletes deserved to be paid for the millions of dollars they bring to schools. Peterson said he felt a bond with Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel as a fellow high-profile athlete who generated significant revenues while he was in school at Oklahoma.
