Former Utahn killed by Seattle police after bank robbery

A former Utah man was killed by police in Seattle on April 3 after he allegedly robbed a bank with a fake gun, according to the Seattle Times.

Cody Willis Spafford, 26, was shot multiple times after brandishing a knife and running toward a Seattle police detective, the newspaper reported.

Police said Spafford — wearing "lots of makeup," a fake nose, a dark wig and women's clothing — used a toy handgun to rob a Wells Fargo bank, the newspaper reported.

Shortly after, Spafford was spotted by police, which led to the fatal confrontation.

Spafford was "a talented chef" at the Walrus and Carpenter restaurant in Seattle, and was in the process of moving to New York City "to begin the next chapter in his life as a head chef of a restaurant," according to an obituary published Wednesday in the Salt Lake Tribune.

Utah Court records show Spafford lived in Salt Lake County in 2006, at which time he pleaded guilty to attempted theft and drug possession charges, for which he was sentenced to six months in jail.
