In Malibu, Calif., BYU pitchers Jeff Barker and Brandon Kinser combined for a 1-0 upset over No. 24 Pepperdine, the West Coast Conference's leading team.

Barker went 7 1/3 innings, giving up just three hits and striking out six. But Kinser got the final five outs to get the win in relief. He struck out two Waves hitters in the ninth to improve to 3-2.

The Cougars scored their lone run in the ninth inning. Freshman Brennon Lund started things off by getting hit by a pitch. Back-to-back singles by Dillon Robinson and Brock Whitney loaded the bases. Kelton Caldwell then launched a fly ball deep to right for the game-winning sacrifice fly.

Pepperdine (25-8, 10-3 WCC) will again host BYU (14-21, 5-8) on Friday at 4 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m. MDT.

Softball

Utah Valley 12, Santa Clara 4 • After falling behind 4-0 at home Thursday, the Wolverines erupted for 12 straight runs for their first home win of the season. Morgan Summers went 3-for-4 with a triple for UVU. Brittney Vansway went 3-for-4 with a home run and 3 RBI.

Arizona State 5, Utah 1 • The Utes lost Thursday night in Tempe, Ariz., to the No. 6 Wildcats to fall to 16-17 this season overall, and 3-9 in Pac-12 play. Dallas Escobedo dominated for the Wildcats (36-6, 10-3) until the seventh inning, when the Utes' Marissa Mendenhall hit a solo homer to spoil the shutout.
