A surge of police officers on bicycles netted five felony arrests during a crackdown on drug crime in the Pioneer Park area of downtown Salt Lake City.

Focusing Thursday on an area bounded by 100 to 500 South and 200 to 600 West, the Salt Lake City Police Department's Downtown Bike Squads unit arrested and jailed five men, ages 19, 32, 33, 43 and 44, on felony counts of heroin and cocaine distribution.

Two of the arrestees were found to have active warrants as well, police said.

The targeted area, where the bulk of the city's homeless population resides, also includes Pioneer Park, which has been notorious for criminal activity, including drug use and sales.
