The Utah baseball team broke a scoreless tie in the seventh inning Thursday night at Smith's Ballpark, but the visiting UCLA Bruins plated three runs in the final two innings to escape with a 3-1 win in the series opener.
U. starting pitcher Dalton Carroll had a no-hitter going into the sixth inning. He gave up an unearned run in the eighth, allowed just three hits and walked one while striking out a career-high nine. Wyler Smith and Cody Scaggari each had two hits for the Utes.
The teams will play Game 2 on Friday at 5 p.m. in a game that will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
Loyola Marymount 2, BYU 0 • The visiting Lions shut down the Cougars at Miller Park behind a six-hitter by Colin Welmon. BYU's Desmond Poulsen had a strong start but picked up the loss. He allowed just two runs over 6 1⁄3 innings.

Softball
Utah 12, Stanford 7 • Things didn't look good for the Utes headed into the bottom of the second trailing Stanford 7-0 at Utah Softball Stadium. But Utah's bats came alive as the team scored in each of the next five innings for a season-high 12 runs. It was the first time in Pac-12 play this season the Utes (19-19, 4-11 Pac-12) have scored double-digits in runs.
Freshman shortstop Anissa Urtez hit a grand slam and a double to drive in a season-high six runs. She leads the U. with 34 RBIs this season.
Utah will play Stanford (25-17, 2-11) again Friday at 3 p.m. in a game that will be televised on the Pac-12 Network.
Dixie 3, SUU 0 • Dixie State (40-8) shut out Southern Utah (14-22) in Cedar City to extend its winning streak to 17.
Women's tennis
BYU 4, Portland 3 • Morgan Anderson-Littlewood led the Cougars to victory in Portland, winning in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 over Marina Reimers in No. 6 singles. Mayci Jones, Nicolette Tran and Toby Miclat also scored wins for BYU.
