Thoughts on BYU's post-spring football depth chart

Two weeks to the day after they wrapped up spring camp, the BYU coaches released their 2014 Post-Spring Depth Chart on Friday afternoon.Seemingly, the biggest battles for starting spots this fall will be on the offensive line, so let's start there first. Right now, four seniors are listed as starters: De'Ondre Wesley (LT), Solomone Kafu (LG), Edward Fusi (C) and Michael Yeck (RT). The starting right guard is listed as freshman Tuni Kanuch, which would be quite an accomplishment for the returned missionary who played defensive line before spring camp. Backups are Ului Lapuaho (LT), Terrance Alletto (LG), Parker Dawe (C), Brock Stringham (RG) and Kyle Johnson (RT). Interestingly, Alletto was the starting center last year until he got hurt; And a couple of guys who most people think will start in the fall — Ryker Mathews and Brayden Kearsley — didn't make the two-deep. Mathews missed most of camp recovering from injuries and Kearsley missed most of the workouts due to academic issues. Jordan Black, the former Alta High product who instigated some scuffles early in camp, is not listed on the roster, for some reason. No other big surprises on the offensive side of the ball, although Adam Hine, who missed camp after shoulder surgery, is listed as Jamaal Williams' backup at running back. Paul Lasike is the starting fullback, ahead of Algernon Brown, who coaches said had a great camp. At inside receiver, Terenn Houk, a junior, has moved in front of Brett Thompson, a senior. Mitch Mathews or Ross Apo are the starters at one receiver spot; Kurt Henderson is listed as the starter at the other, ahead of touted juco transfer Nick Kurtz "or" Colby Pearson, a walk-on. Moving over to the defense, the defensive line is perhaps not as solidified as folks believed. Returned missionary Graham Rowley, who played two years before his two-year service, has nailed down the left defensive end spot. However, the depth chart lists Remington Peck "or" Travis Tuiloma at right end. And at nose tackle, Marques Johnson (blood clots) is in a battle with the aforementioned Tuiloma. At linebacker, Zac Stout's remarkable comeback story continues. Once kicked out of BYU, Stout is back and listed as the starter at mike linebacker, ahead of returned missionary Austin Heder. As expected, junior Manoa Pikula gets the nod at buck linebacker. The outside linebackers are Alani Fua (strong side) and Bronson Kaufusi (weak side), showing that the Kaufusi experiment — moving the former defensive end to a linebacker spot — is working so far. Former running back Mike Alisa is listed as Fua's backup, while Sae Tautu is Kaufusi's backup going into fall camp. Apparently, Jordan Johnson has recovered from the devastating knee injury he suffered at the start of fall camp last year. The senior is listed as the starting field corner, backed up by juco transfer Trenton Trammell. Surprisingly, Robertson Daniel is listed as the starting boundary corner. He played field corner, and played it well, last year after Johnson went down. Daniel spent a lot of time playing safety in spring camp. Trevor Bateman is his backup at BC. To no one's surprise, senior Craig Bills is listed as the starting strong safety, which BYU calls the KAT safety. At free safety, Skye PoVey and Dallin Leavitt are listed as the co-starters. But they might just be holding down the spot until Nebraska transfer Harvey Jackson arrives. Kai Nacua, who played a lot of free safety in camp, is listed as Bills' backup at KAT. It appears that sophomore Moose Bingham edged out senior Trevor Samson to be the starting kicker after a camp long battle that went down to the final day. Another kicker, Corey Edwards, will join the battle when he returns from a church mission. So who replaces JD Falslev as the punt returner? Right now, it would be a pair of twins few outside the program have heard of: sophomores Garrett and Mitchell Juergens. Both are walk-ons.
