BYU basketball: Matt Carlino transferring to Marquette

Former BYU guard Matt Carlino's next stop will be at Marquette University.

Carlino, who announced he was transferring away from BYU on April 1 for his final season of eligibility, told Jeff Goodman of ESPN that he has committed to play for the Golden Eagles and new coach Steve Wojciechowski.

Ironically, Carlino's last game as a Cougar was played at the BMO Harris Bradley Center in Milwaukee, which is where Marquette plays its home games. The Cougars practiced at Marquette's nearby practice facility the day before their NCAA Tournament loss to Oregon.

Carlino had five assists and no turnovers in that game, but made just 4 of 16 shots from the field.

Carlino has some family ties to the area. His mother grew up in Milwaukee and his uncle, Brian Brunkhorst, played for Marquette before being selected in the 1968 NBA Draft (72nd pick overall) by the New York Knicks.

Carlino also received heavy interest from Purdue, Providence, Memphis, St. Joseph's and Oklahoma State after he announced he was leaving BYU.

Carlino plans to graduate in June with a degree in exercise science and will enter a graduate program at Marquette that BYU does not offer, per NCAA rules.

Carlino averaged 13.7 points, 4.3 assists, 3.4 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game while shooting 38 percent from the field and 33 percent from the 3-point line last season.
