Dumb Utah criminal: Alleged bike thief meets cops in stolen car

If you steal a bike, you probably shouldn't advertise it online.

If you do, you probably shouldn't show up to sell it out of a stolen car.

Unfortunately for a certain 20-year-old man who was arrested Saturday by Salt Lake City Police, that's exactly what he did — and more.

According to police, the owner of a stolen bicycle noticed a bike being advertisement on KSL Classified that closely resembled his. Too closely.

He arranged to meet the seller outside a 7-Eleven at 776 S. 1300 East. Once the men spoke, the victim was convinced the man had his bike.

He called police.

When officers arrived, they discovered that the man attempting to sell the stolen bike had also been driving a stolen car.

Auto theft detectives later identified five other stolen vehicles that the man eventually admitted to stealing, according to the Salt Lake City Police Department.

The man was booked into the Salt Lake County jail on suspicion of a long list of crimes, including several counts of being in possession of stolen property, failure to stop at the command of law enforcement, theft and possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia.
