Letter: At BYU, we know what 'fair' is

Well, being a BYU guy, I have never been a big fan of the Utes unless they were playing out of state teams. However, I had always thought they were a pretty good university. Until today!

I read in the newspaper that the new student officers are getting ready to change the school song because, among other things, it has the phrase about the coeds being "fair," and they are taking that to mean light skinned and discriminatory .

Wow, I thought everybody knows that's just an old term for "good looking" such as "she was the fairest of them all." I know it is not BYU, but surely they must have some good looking girls at the U. so they could have a hint as to what that means.

Maybe next the Utes will be urging BYU to change our song, "rise and shout, the cougars are out" as it may be offensive to older women who prey on younger guys and are known by the slang term "cougar." You gotta hand it to them, though. Those Utes like being politically correct.

Then I read the U. has been paying the Ute tribe a royalty for their team name. Perhaps I need to send my claim in to Notre Dame, the Fighting Irish. Think how much they must owe us Irish descendants by now.
