A Taylorsville man died Saturday after his car fell on top of him.

About 1:23 p.m., Joseph Melnicki, 58, was working underneath his Ford Taurus at an apartment complex near 1100 W. 3900 South, with the car supported by a jack, said Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal.

Somehow, the car came down on top of the man, Hoyal said. Investigators are still looking into how it happened, though Hoyal added that "it just appears right now to be a tragic accident."

Another tenant heard a thud and, seeing what had happened, called for other tenants to help, Hoyal said. They were able to lift the car up and pull Melnicki out, but he died at the scene, the lieutenant said.
