Salt Lake cops: Shooting victims were an escort and her client

Detectives on Wednesday were slowly unraveling details in a double shooting that left a Sugar House area man and a woman hospitalized in serious condition.

Salt Lake City police Detective Veronica Montoya said investigators had determined that the woman, in her mid-20s, was an employee of an escort service. She had been called by the 32-year-old male resident to his apartment at 1856 S. 1200 East.

Several 911 calls, beginning at 4:17 a.m. Tuesday, reported gunshots and the sounds of a woman screaming from inside the man's unit. They found the woman, reportedly wearing only a towel, outside the apartment, bleeding.

Detectives say that sometime after the woman arrived, there was a struggle, during which a handgun was produced. Both the man and woman suffered gunshot wounds as they fought for the weapon.

Police declined to specify where the wounds occurred on the victims' bodies, but did confirm that both the man and woman remained in serious condition Wednesday at unspecified hospitals.

During a search of the apartment, police recovered a handgun believed to have been used in the shootings.
