Salt Lake City cabbie knifed in late-night ..

Salt Lake City police on Thursday were looking for armed robbery suspect who left a cab driver in the hospital in serious condition with multiple stab wounds.

Public safety dispatchers confirmed that a 911 call came in at 11:10 p.m. Wednesday after a motorist noticed the injured cabbie in a parking lot at 910 N. 900 West. The good samaritan also drove the victim to University Hospital.

Police said the man was stabbed several times in the back as the suspect — described as a 6-foot black man, wearing a black jacket and blue jeans — took the cabbie's wallet and cellphone before fleeing on foot into the night.

Police said the suspect had called for the taxi to take him to a Smith's grocery store. He then changed his mind, asking to be taken back to the vicinity of 900 North and 900 West.

Once stopped, the suspect ordered the cabbie out of the taxi, pushed him up against the driver's side of the vehicle, assaulted and robbed him.
