Salt Lake City police say a motorcyclist's gamble at a railroad crossing missed an oncoming train; it was the descending barrier arm that put him in the hospital.

SLCPD Detective Veronica Montoya said the 60-year-old rider clipped the arm as he blew through the crossing just before 7 a.m. Wednesday. He crashed just a few feet later and landing hard on the asphalt on eastbound California Avenue near 4800 West.

The man was initially listed in critical condition when transported to the hospital, but was upgraded to serious condition later Wednesday morning.

Montoya said no other vehicles were involved in the accident.
