The Utewrap — The week in Utah sports, May 12-18

Coaches are fond of the notion that a program never stays the same: Every day, you're either rising or falling.

This week, the Tribune talked a little bit about a program on the rise - men's basketball under Larry Krystkowiak - and a program that's had its share of struggle - Utah baseball in the Pac-12. But on the Hill, there were probably more risers than fallers (just look at the Academic Progress Rate for some evidence of that notion) and we cover them all in this week's Utewrap:

BASEBALL • The week couldn't have started out any better for the U., which got a walk-off win over hated rival BYU thanks to an RBI single by Biss Larsen. But the Utes couldn't sustain that success on the road, falling to Pac-12 foe Arizona State three straight games in the final conference road trip of the season. The news was better in the majors, where former Ute C.J. Cron has been getting a strong start to his MLB career.

ON DECK: vs. Stanford (Noon on Friday, Saturday, Sunday; Smith Ballpark)

SOFTBALL • The Utes won't have anymore games this season after not making NCAA regionals, but there was definitely some good postseason news. The team had five all-conference honorees, led by all-Pac-12 first teamer Hannah Flippen. Four of the five Utes to get all-Pac-12 recognition were freshmen.

ON DECK: Season over.

WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD • The Pac-12 championships showed the Utes still have far to go, as the program finished back in 11th place in the team competition. Still, the 23 points Utah scored as a team was a program-best since joining the conference. Among the top finishers was Rosalie Waller, who was second in the 800m with a 2:07.20. The 4x400 relay team set a new program record, finishing fifth, and the Utes placed three athletes in the top 10 of the hammer throw. Now Utah will hope for individual qualifiers for NCAA competition.

ON DECK: NCAA preliminaries (Fayetteville, Ark., May 29-31)

FOOTBALL • Although the Utes probably didn't get as many NFL draftees as they hoped, there was definitely still some afterglow from last weekend as some former Utah stars nestled in their new homes. Trevor Reilly signed to terms with the New York Jets to get started. The Tribune learned the Utes will have a walk-on this fall who is anything but ordinary: former four-star lineman Logan Stott. The coaching staff was around the country recruiting again, and one of the recent recruits they've offered is Dres Anderson's younger brother. In the larger view, the Pac-12 announced they'll be playing the football title game at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., a shiny new home reflecting the ambitions of the conference.

MEN'S BASKETBALL • The Utes had a recruiting class ranked the best among the Pac-12 this week, but also learned they wouldn't get the services of Namon Wright, who recommitted to Missouri. The program did get a new addition, bringing in Highland grad Jake Connor (son of assistant Tommy Connor) as a walk-on. The hoops program was one of the big winners of the aforementioned APR report, getting a perfect score in the 2012-13 year.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL • Former Ute Michelle Plouffe will look to continue her pro career elsewhere after being cut by the Seattle Storm.

TENNIS • Even though the Utes were off the court this week, they won big: The U. announced plans to build outdoor tennis facilities estimated at $2.5 million to the state regents. It should be a pretty nice venue for a team starting a new era under a new coach.
