West Valley City party turns riot; cops arrest dozen revelers

It took police from multiple agencies to quell an early Sunday morning riot by more than 150 West Valley City partygoers.

Public safety dispatchers said the first call of a noise complaint came in at 1:10 a.m. from a residence in the 4500 West block of Volta Avenue (3950 South). Numerous additional 911 calls came in within the next 30 minutes, some reporting the noise and drunkenness of the partygoers, and others from people inside the party complaining that their host, armed with a knife, was refusing to let them leave.

Repeated attempts by police to get someone to answer the door failed. "They could see people inside, hear people inside, but no one was coming," said Lt. Dalin Taylor.

When officers entered the home they were reportedly attacked by several people and forced to exit. WVCPD called for backup and dozens of officers from neighboring Murray, South Jordan, South Salt Lake, West Jordan, Unified Police and Utah Highway Patrol responded.

The host, a 20-year-old California man, and 11 others were arrested. In addition, officers issued 60 citations, mostly for underage drinking, Taylor said.

None of the officers or partygoers was seriously injured. "It was mostly bumps and bruises," he said.

The 20-year-old suspect was booked into Salt Lake County Jail, where he was being held in lieu of $4,153 bail on suspicion of first-degree felony aggravated kidnapping, third-degree felony rioting, third-degree weapons possession by a restricted person, and nine misdemeanor counts ranging from providing alcohol to minors and possession of drug paraphernalia to disorderly conduct.
