Possible confession in Utah rock art panel vandalism

Price • Authorities investigating the vandalism of a popular rock art panel northeast of Price say they're pursuing a possible confession to the damage.

Ahmed Mohsen, acting field manager for the U.S. Bureau of Land Management's Price office, said Wednesday that an individual confessed to a local property owner and authorities are following up on the lead.

He did not release details about the individual and says no one has been questioned yet.

Mohsen says archeologists are still reviewing the extent of the damages.

Officials on Sunday discovered the initials "JMN" etched into the rock near an image of a pregnant buffalo.

Thousands of people visit the rock art panels in Nine Mile Canyon each year. The images are believed to date back to the Fremont period between 900 and 1250.
