Former BYU golfer Zac Blair overcame tough odds to qualify for next week's U.S. Open, earning medalist honors in a sectional event Monday.

Blair shot 69-68 for a 7-under-par total at Emerald Valley Golf Course in Creswell, Oregon, winning by four strokes and earning one of two spots in a field of 50 players. The U.S. Open is June 12-15 at Pinehurst, North Carolina.

Blair, 23, had advanced through the local qualifying stage at Alpine Country Club in early May. He's a member of the PGA Tour Latin America, which recently completed the first half of its split season and will resume competition in September.

Born in Ogden, Blair is a product of Fremont High School and won the 2009 State Amateur. Last year, St. George native Jay Don Blake was the oldest U.S. Open contestant at 54.

Several other golfers with Utah ties competed Monday in sectional events at various sites. Sandy resident Mike Weir came the closest to advancing, shooting 71-72 and missing the cut by three strokes at Columbus, Ohio.

West High graduate Tony Finau (68-73) missed by five strokes at Springfield, Ohio.

New Zealand's Steve Alker, the winner of the 2013 Utah Championship on the Web.com Tour, advanced at Daly City, Calif.
