UHP identifies suspected drunk driver in multi-injury crash

The Utah Highway Patrol has identified the tight-lipped "John Doe"suspect of being drunk when he allegedly triggered a multi-injury crash this weekend in Tooele County.

UHP Sgt. Todd Royce said on Tuesday that investigators, who resorted to fingerprints after the suspect refused to give them his name, had finally identified the man as Saul Sanchez-Cruz, 28, of Salt Lake City.

A man and his teenage son were ejected and seriously injured after the suspect's vehicle struck a minivan, causing it to roll on eastbound Interstate 80 near State Road 201. Royce said they were both reported improving and were expected to recover.

UHP said that Sanchez-Cruz attempted to flee the crash site, running east on the State Road 201 ramp, but a trooper caught up to him and took him into custody.

Tooele County jail records showed that Sanchez-Cruz was being held Tuesday without bail on suspicion of felony DUI and leaving the scene of an injury accident. Also, because he allegedly urinated and vomited in the back seat of a UHP cruiser, Sanchez-Cruz was booked on a misdemeanor count of damaging a police vehicle.
