Police are asking the public's help in bringing to justice a multi-tool wielding shoplifter who stole and broke a longboard during his downtown Salt Lake City escape.

The suspect — described as a skinny white man about 25-30 years old, 5-foot-10, and wearing a blue dress shirt and dark jeans — was confronted by a security officer about 10 a.m. Tuesday as he exited the Macy's store at 200 E. South Temple.

The suspect, who was believed to have pocketed several watches, pulled a Leatherman-style multi-tool, with the knife blade extended, and lunged at a security officer when confronted.

The security officer was not hurt, and he followed the suspect as he eventually fled into the Gateway Mall area about six blocks west. There, the suspect allegedly stole a longboard — only to crash and land on his face a couple blocks later.

The longboard snapped in two, but the suspect was able to get up and run away.

Police on Thursday released security camera images of the suspect. Anyone with information on this case is asked to call SLCPD at 801-799-3000.
