Utah forecast: A broad-brimmed hat and sunscreen kind of weekend

Time to dust off those broad-brimmed hats and slather on the sunscreen: Utah's weekend forecast calls for rising temperatures under bright, clear skies.

Temperatures along the Wasatch Front on Saturday are expected to climb into the low- to mid-80s, the same range forecast for Friday — minus the late afternoon thunderstorms and gusty winds.

In other words, it will be the kind of weekend the late Janis Joplin's "Summertime" blues classic advised us to "rise up singing . . . spread your wings [and] take to the sky."

Southern Utahns were in full-blown shorts, tank tops and sandals mode. Highs both Friday and Saturday were to flirt with, or top, 100 degrees.

The warmer weather translated to a Flood Advisory for northeastern Utah's Vernal area as accelerated mountain snowmelt was pushing up the level of the Green River and its tributaries.

The Utah Division of Air Quality predicted "yellow," or compromised breathing conditions statewide through the coming weekend.

The Intermountain Allergy & Asthma website's pollen index was "high" only for grass and plantain.
