Annapolis, Md. • President Barack Obama has appointed a new superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy.
Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel announced Friday that the president appointed Navy Rear Adm. Walter Carter, though the appointment still needs to be approved by the U.S. Senate. Carter will also be promoted to the rank of vice admiral.
Carter is now serving as president of the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island.
He would replace Vice Adm. Michael Miller, who became the 61st superintendent of the academy in Annapolis, Maryland, in 2010.
