Utah boy killed by falling statue in San Francisco

San Francisco • A 2-year-old boy visiting from Utah was killed after a 6-foot-tall dolphin statue fell on him in the popular San Francisco tourist spot Fisherman's Wharf.

The toddler was apparently playing when he climbed up and apparently wrapped his arms and legs around the heavy structure outside Friday Majestic Collection Art Gallery when it came down, San Francisco police spokesman officer Gordon Shyy said Monday.

When emergency crews arrived on the scene, the boy was initially treated for a nose bleed and taken to San Francisco General Hospital, where he later died from more serious internal injuries a few hours later, Shyy said.

The medical examiner has identified the boy as 2-year-old Kayson Shelton of Draper.

The boy was visiting San Francisco with his mother, father and older sister and other family members while on vacation and had been staying at a nearby hotel, Shyy said. "It's an unfortunate and tragic incident," he said.

The store violated a city code and was cited for placing an object or merchandise on a sidewalk where it impedes pedestrian traffic, Shyy said.
