The Grand County Sheriff's Office has identified a man who was fatally crushed by a garbage truck as it completed unloading trash.

Sheriff's Deputy Kim Neal said that Jay L. Stevens, 51, of Moab, was an employee of Bob's Sanitation. The accident occurred at 9:36 a.m. Monday, shortly after the truck had pulled into one of the bays at the refuse service's trash transfer station.

Neal said the truck had just unloaded and its lift gate had been raised. The truck then pulled forward and stopped, and when the gate was lowered Stevens was caught between the gate and the rear of the truck.

The accident remained under investigation.
