Sports briefs: Swimmer Van Dyken-Rouen sits up in bed

Scottsdale, Ariz. • Olympic champion swimmer Amy Van Dyken-Rouen sat up in her hospital bed for the first time since severing her spinal cord in an all-terrain vehicle accident.

The six-time gold medalist posted two photos on Instagram on Tuesday, one a selfie of her in bed and another of her sitting up with help from two hospital workers.

She was in good condition Tuesday, but her family asked that no more details be released as she recovers, hospital spokeswoman Alice Giedraitis said.

The 41-year-old swimmer was injured Friday night when she hit a curb while riding an ATV near Show Low and flew off a drop-off of 5 to 7 feet, according to a police report. Sonnen fails drug test, out of UFC 175 bout

Las Vegas • Veteran UFC light heavyweight Chael Sonnen has failed a drug test, forcing him out of his bout with Vitor Belfort at UFC 175 in Las Vegas next month.

Sonnen says he tested positive for two banned substances last month. The former title contender is likely to face a suspension by the Nevada Athletic Commission.

Sonnen attempted to defend himself Tuesday on Fox Sports Radio, claiming he took anastrozole and clomiphene as part of his move off testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), which was outlawed by Nevada regulators earlier this year. Sonnen had an exemption allowing his steroid use, but gave up TRT after it was banned. The 37-year-old Sonnen (28-14-1) said he plans to appeal the commission's decision next week.

Texans' Quessenberry has lymphoma

The Houston Texans say offensive tackle David Quessenberry has lymphoma and has been placed on the NFL's non-football illness list.

The team said Tuesday he had a persistent cough over the past week and was tired, prompting him to seek an evaluation. He is being treated at a Houston-area hospital.
