Brush fire reported near Draper homes

Investigators said Thursday they believe a brush fire that threatened several Draper homes was human caused.

The Unified Fire Authority is asking anyone with information on the fire to call the UFA Arson Hotline at 877-572-7766.

The fire ignited about 2 p.m. near 12600 S. Highland Drive. The flames threatened about a dozen buildings, but the fire never reached them thanks to a quick and heavy response from several fire departments and the changing wind blowing the fire back on itself, said Unified Fire Battalion Chief Brian Anderton.

Unified Fire Authority received help from at least the South Jordan, Sandy and Bluffdale fire departments, Anderton said.

The fire grew to about 20 acres before firefighters contained the blaze about 3:30 p.m. Firefighters turned their attention to hot spots as another storm cell rolled across the Salt Lake Valley.

A red flag warning is in effect for much of northwest Utah, including the Salt Lake Valley until 10 p.m. Friday.
