Ex-BYU football star Gordon Hudson arrested on domestic violence charges

Former BYU All-America tight end Gordon Hudson was arrested at his residence in Layton on suspicion of domestic violence and assault and booked into the Davis County Jail early Thursday morning, Layton Police Lt. Shawn Horton said Thursday afternoon.

Horton said officers responded to a call around 11:15 p.m. Wednesday night about a domestic disturbance at Hudson's home.

Hudson was not there when officers arrived, but were told he was in an argument with his wife earlier that night and that his 23-year-old stepson intervened.

"The incident turned physical between Mr. Hudson and his stepson," Horton said.

The stepson told police that he was protecting his mother.

After the police left, Hudson returned to the home again, around 12:30 a.m., and allegedly kicked in a door and assaulted the stepson in the presence of his stepdaughters, who are 13 and 15, Horton said.

Police were then called back to the home and arrested Hudson.

He was booked on suspicion of domestic violence in the presence of a child, assault, and criminal mischief. Bail was set at $3,740.

Hudson was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 2009 and after a standout career at BYU from 1980-83 and stints in the National Football League and United States Football League.

Wednesday's incident was not the first time Hudson has had a brush with the law since his hall of fame enshrinement.

Court records show Hudson was charged with assault, intoxication and domestic violence in the presence of a child in 2010, also in Layton. He was sentenced to community service and a fine after pleading guilty to intoxication. The other charges were dropped.
