W. Jordan cops: Booze, domestic dispute and arson lead to jail

Booze, a domestic dispute and an alleged decision to set a house full of people aflame has landed a 50-year-old woman behind bars.

West Jordan Deputy Fire Chief Reed Scharman said the suspect was arrested in connection with a Sunday morning blaze at a home near 1600 W. 8700 South. At the time of the fire, eight other people, one a child, were inside the residence.

Upon arrival at the fire, crews found a bedroom and adjoining bathroom in flames, as well as extensive smoke and heat damage throughout the home's upstairs.

The suspect allegedly told investigators that she had fallen asleep in bed with a lit cigarette, but Scharman stated that arson investigators found evidence that the fire had been intentionally set.

The woman was arrested and booked into Salt Lake County Jail on suspicion of first-degree felony aggravated arson, along with numerous misdemeanor counts ranging from domestic assault in the presence of a child, criminal mischief and reckless endangerment to public intoxication.

West Jordan police said the domestic violence and criminal mischief counts stemmed from earlier calls to the home last Friday and Saturday.

The suspect remained in jail Monday in lieu of nearly $20,000 bail.
